Vogel Cable Car: Riding Up Above Lake Bohinj

The Vogel cable car carries you roughly 1,000 meters up from the Bohinj valley to a ridge above Lake Bohinj, where the top station sits at about 1,535 meters with views across the basin toward Triglav. The ride is the point: a short, steep gondola climb from the forest at Ukanc to open high ground inside Triglav National Park. This guide covers where the lower station is, how to get there without a car, what the top station offers, and how much of a day to set aside.

Where the Vogel cable car sits above Lake Bohinj

Vogel is the mountain and ski area on the southeastern side of the Julian Alps, and the cable car rises from its lower station in the Bohinj valley to a top station above the lake. The Bohinj destination site puts the upper station at 1,535 meters at a spot called Brown Rock, about 1,000 meters above Lake Bohinj, from which you look over the Bohinj Basin and toward Triglav. Treat the ride as a viewpoint trip first and everything else second.

The lower station is at Ukanc, at the western end of Lake Bohinj, and the operator gives its address as Ukanc 6, 4265 Bohinjsko jezero. That end of the lake is the quiet one, which matters when you plan how to arrive. The whole approach is about positioning yourself at the far end of the water before you queue.

How to reach the lower station at Ukanc

Sponsored

You can walk to the lower station along maintained paths on either the north or the south shore of Lake Bohinj, and the operator also lists public transport, the tourist boat and driving with parking at the base among the ways to arrive. Walking from the eastern end of the lake is the slow option; it is also the one that puts the lake in front of you the whole way.

If you come by car, the operator's own guidance is strict: park only in marked spaces, not along regional roads, or expect a fine. It describes the lot at the lower station as free, but a free lot still fills, so arrive earlier than you think on a summer morning. Drivers coming from outside the valley usually approach through Bohinjska Bistrica, which is also where the Bohinj railway puts you if you travel by train.

By train, the Bohinj railway is the scenic route into the valley, and Bohinjska Bistrica is the practical stop for the lake end of the line. From there you still need a bus, taxi or a long walk to reach Ukanc, so check the local connection before you commit to a rail-only plan.

The ride up: gondola hours and what you see

The gondola is posted as running from 8:00 to 18:00, departing every half hour. The cabin does the climbing for you, so the trip is short rather than a hike, and the view opens as soon as you clear the treeline.

At the top you step out at over 1,500 meters, looking down on the Bohinj Basin and Lake Bohinj with the Julian Alps around you and Triglav, the country's highest peak, on the skyline. The Bohinj destination site notes that the top station is accessible for visitors with disabilities, which is worth knowing if stairs are a problem. Bring a layer: the ridge is cooler and breezier than the shore.

Hours on the board do not guarantee a ride. The operator posts maintenance windows on the cable car, and when work is scheduled it says the lift does not run at all, so the operating status matters more than the timetable. Check the current conditions and operation notice the morning you go.

What to do at the top station

Two separate lifts sit above the gondola, and each is its own decision. The four-seater Orlove Glave chairlift is posted at 9:00 to 16:00 and the circular Zadnji Vogel cable car at 9:00 to 15:00, both running daily except in bad weather. Whether the gondola ticket includes either higher lift is not stated, so treat them as extra rides to price separately; the operator's price list has the details.

The circular Zadnji Vogel cabin is the newer addition, a panoramic ride on the Orlove Glave to Zadnji Vogel line that takes a few minutes and is designed for the view rather than the altitude. The operator says it also runs during the main part of the summer season, with the caveat that you should confirm operation before a summer visit.

On foot from the top station, the information trail explains the area's natural and cultural history, and the Bohinj destination site points to the Lopata primeval forest and the Zadnji Vogel alpine meadow with its cheese-making as reasons to walk further. The mountain itself tops out at 1,922 meters, well above the lift, so the ridge is a starting point rather than a summit.

How much time to allow

Sponsored

A bare-bones visit, meaning the gondola up, a walk around the top station and the gondola down, fits into about two hours, and that is what to plan if the weather is closing in. Add an hour or more if you take the chairlift or the circular cabin, since each has its own queue and its own closing time in the afternoon.

Walkers who want the information trail, the meadow and a proper look at the Lopata forest should give the mountain half a day, because the paths at 1,500 meters take longer than the map suggests. Tacking Savica Waterfall onto the same day works best if you ride up early and save the waterfall for the afternoon, when the gondola queue has thinned.

Bohinj Attractions covers the other stops around the lake if you are building a full day rather than a single ride.

Winter on Vogel versus the green season

In winter the gondola is the access lift for a ski area on natural snow, with slopes for beginners and stronger skiers and a snow park for freestyle riders. The operator describes up to 22 km of runs when snow allows, and it states that the 2025/26 ski season closed on April 6, 2026. Skiers should read the daily lift and slope status, not the season summary.

Outside the ski season the same lift serves walkers, with the information trail, the meadow and the chairlift ride as the main draws and the caveat that summer operation of the circular cabin should be verified. Spring and autumn are the awkward months: the operator schedules maintenance then, and the lift can be out of service entirely.

Dogs are allowed on the lift but must be muzzled or carried in a case, and the operator charges extra for them according to its price list. Ticket prices for people and dogs are on the operator's price list rather than fixed here, so read it before you queue.

Nearby: Savica Waterfall and other Bohinj options

Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica) is the natural pairing with Vogel, reached from the same western end of the lake, and it makes a sensible second stop after the gondola rather than a morning commitment. The walk in and the falls themselves take longer than the drive between the two.

Back at lake level, the Church of St. John the Baptist in Bohinj and the Mostnica Gorge at Stara Fužina fill a quieter half-day when the ridge is clouded in and the cable car view would be wasted. Check the conditions before committing to the mountain, then fall back to these if the top is socked in.

Is the cable car ride worth your morning?

Ride Vogel if you want the view without the climb: the gondola delivers you to roughly 1,535 meters in minutes, and the ridge walk, chairlift and circular cabin give you reasons to stay past the first photograph. Skip it if the cloud is down, the maintenance notice is up, or you would rather spend the day at water level around Lake Bohinj.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book the Vogel cable car in advance?

No booking step is described for the gondola itself; you turn up at the lower station at Ukanc during operating hours and ride. Group travel, school parties and anything tied to the chairlift or the circular cabin are worth confirming with the operator, Žičnice Vogel Bohinj, before you travel. Check the maintenance notice first: the lift is scheduled to remain closed until December 1, 2026, with the exact reopening announced later.

Can I reach the Vogel cable car without a car?

The lower station is reached by walking along the north or south shore of Lake Bohinj, by the tourist boat, or by public transport, and the Bohinj railway brings you to Bohinjska Bistrica with a local connection beyond. Allow extra time for the last stretch to Ukanc. Whether the gondola is running on your date depends on the maintenance schedule, so check current conditions before setting out.

What should I wear at the top station?

The top station sits above 1,500 meters, so expect cooler, windier conditions than at the lake even on a warm valley day, and bring a jacket plus shoes with grip for the paths around the ridge.
