Lakes and Alpine Towns of the Slovenian Alps
16 guides
Lake Bled sets the pace: a 6 km paved loop right beside the water that most walkers finish in a relaxed couple of hours, stretched by stops at boat rental points, island views and benches. Getting to Bled Island is its own decision, between a pletna rowed standing by a local pletnar from one of four boarding points and a rowboat you handle yourself. Radovljica, a compact medieval old town on a ridge above the Sava, makes an easy add-on.
Bohinj rewards planning more than Bled does. Kayaking is regulated, with launches only at marked entry and exit points and a permit bought before you paddle, and fees vary by tier. The lakeside walk is flat rather than a mountain hike, linking Ribčev Laz and Ukanc, with the Savica extension adding steps and climb. At Kranjska Gora, two connected lakes sit at the edge of town, five marked Karavanke cycling loops leave from the Tourist Information Centre, and the Vršič Pass road runs through the village on its way to 50 hairpins.
Higher up, Triglav National Park holds Pokljuka, a forested plateau about 20 km from Bled where you drive between stops, and Dom Trenta, the park information center in the Soča Valley. Mount Triglav, the 2,864-meter peak on the coat of arms, can be seen from the valleys and plateaus without a climb.
