Nova Gorica attractions: plan your hill, bridge and border stops

Nova Gorica spreads its sights from the train station up onto the hills. Trg Evrope, the paved square split by the Italian border, sits right outside the station and takes about 20 minutes to cross on foot; further out, the Solkan Bridge is viewable only from riverbank trails and local roads, a short stop on uneven ground with no facilities.

Sveta Gora, the compact hilltop church and two chapels above town, is the main draw and asks for about an hour of quiet viewing and a valley panorama. Kostanjevica Monastery, a Franciscan friary on a hill, holds the crypt of the exiled Bourbons and a wall of original Bourbon roses that flower in May and June; access depends on the friars, so call before you climb.

Kromberk Castle, a square 17th-century mansion with four corner towers and a park, sits a few minutes from central Nova Gorica, about 3 km east of Gorizia. The outside is reliable; the upper-floor museum rooms open unpredictably, so confirm with the Goriški muzej.

The Solkan Bridge, a working stone railway arch over the Soča, is also free to view from the riverbank trails and local roads — you cannot walk across it.

Both are short, outdoor stops. The bridge involves uneven ground and no facilities, so treat it as a quick photo stop; the square works well on arrival at the station.
