Ptuj sightseeing: How to Plan a Castle and Old-Town Day

Ptuj's sights stack neatly into one walkable day, with a cluster of stops in the old town and excursions beyond it. Ptuj Castle pulls the crowds, and it is the one place worth building your day around.

The castle is paid, and booking is recommended: adults pay €11 and a family ticket costs €21, with preschoolers free. Allow about two hours inside for the Roman bone flute in its bronze sheath, the arms, the carnival masks and the glass paintings. The museum closes on Mondays outside July and August, and also on January 1, November 1, December 25 and Easter.

Below it, the City Tower at Slovenski trg 14 is a shorter stop, paid at 7 EUR for adults or 15 EUR for a family. Climbing the 54-meter bell tower of St. George's Church means stairs, no lift, past a still-running 21-meter wooden pendulum and a clock that has kept time for over 300 years.

Farther out, the Dominican Monastery on the western edge opens only from April to October, and its cloister and halls take about an hour. Lake Ptuj, the Drava reservoir southeast of town, is a working hydroelectric lake suited to rowing, sailing and fishing; over 230 bird species nest along its protected shore.

Tickets worth arranging before you go

Ptuj Castle and the City Tower both ask you to book ahead. The castle is the bigger commitment at €11 for adults, €21 for a family and free for preschoolers, so reserve it for the day you want your two hours inside. The tower is cheaper at 7 EUR for adults and 15 EUR for a family, and the climb is short enough to slot in around it. The Dominican Monastery and Lake Ptuj leave booking open, so check hours as your dates approach rather than relying on a reservation.

Seasonal hours to check before setting out

The Dominican Monastery is the one stop with a real season: it opens April 1 to October 31 according to the monastery, though the tourism listing gives April 1 to September 30, so confirm the day's hours first. Its halls sometimes host events. Ptuj Castle shuts on Mondays outside July and August and on January 1, November 1, December 25 and Easter. If a stop is closed, the City Tower and Lake Ptuj stay open and fill the time.
