Ptuj City Tower: What to See Inside and at the Top

Ptuj City Tower is the stone bell tower of St. George's Church at Slovenski trg 14 in Ptuj, rising 54 meters above the old town and topped with a bulbous dome. The tower's own page describes the current exterior as dating from 1603, built on the foundations of an earlier Gothic tower. Visitors climb a staircase through several floors of exhibits to a viewing level at the top. This guide covers where the tower stands, how to reach it, when it is open, what you see on each floor and how much time to allow.

The tower sits at the end of Prešernova ulica on Slovenski trg, which makes it easy to pair with a walk through the center of Ptuj. The building is still the bell tower of the church, and its clock mechanism is on display inside. More places to see in town are collected in Ptuj Attractions: 4 Visitor Guides.

Where the tower stands on Slovenski trg

The address is Slovenski trg 14, 2250 Ptuj, on the square at the end of Prešernova ulica. The tower's pages give that street address and note that it is also the bell tower of St. George's Church. The square is the most straightforward landmark to aim for when walking into the center.

Opening hours by season

In the warmer months the tower opens Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM and on Sundays from 11:30 AM to 8:30 PM. From October to April the hours shorten: Monday to Friday 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM, and Sundays 11:30 AM to 7:30 PM. Both schedules are published on the tower's frequently asked questions page. The published hours sidebars on the site show a Monday-to-Saturday line, so treat the FAQ's weekday wording as the day-by-day guide.

Ticket prices, including child and family rates

Sponsored

Adult tickets are 7 EUR and a family ticket is 15 EUR. Students and seniors pay 5 EUR, and children up to five years old have free admission. The FAQ lists children aged six to fifteen at 4 EUR, while the price list in the site sidebar shows 3 EUR, so confirm the child rate at the desk before paying.

Tickets can be bought on the tower's website using the Tickets button, and groups can buy online through the group page. Tickets purchased through the website cannot be canceled, so confirm your date before paying. For mistakes or cancellations, the tower asks visitors to email info@mestni-stolp.si.

How to reach the tower and where to park

On foot, the tower is at the end of Prešernova ulica on Slovenski trg, a short walk from the center's main streets. Drivers can use several parking spaces near the tower; fees apply until 4:00 PM on weekdays and until 1:00 PM on Saturdays, and parking is free on Sundays. Those cutoff times come from the tower's own parking answer, so check the signs before leaving the car.

A tour bus can drop visitors at the parking lot below the castle on Raičeva ulica 7, where the bus can also park for free, or at the Zadružni trg P+R parking lot at Zadružni trg 15. The tower limits visitors to 40 people per floor, so larger groups should coordinate in advance by email or through the group form. That cap matters most at the top, where everyone wants the same view.

Climbing the tower: floors, steps and what each level shows

The visit is a staircase climb through several floors. The interiors hold an interactive exhibition on the tower's history, the clock mechanism, the bells and archaeological finds. Expect a steady upward walk rather than a lift; there is no mention of one in the tower's access answer.

Each landing breaks up the climb with something to look at, which helps if you are pacing yourself. Visitors who have reviewed the tower mention climbing all the floors and find the view at the top worth the effort. Allow pauses at each level rather than treating the staircase as a race.

The clock mechanism and the 21-meter wooden pendulum

Sponsored

The tower's clock has run for more than 300 years on gears, weights and a wooden pendulum 21 meters long, still without electricity. The mechanism turns the hands on three sides of the tower, and the tower describes the pendulum as the longest still in operation. You can see the workings inside on the way up.

The missing dial on the north side is part of the display's story: popular tradition says the nobles refused to fund the clock's purchase or restoration. The tower also notes a resemblance to Leonardo da Vinci's plans, though no link has been confirmed. Read the panels for the details rather than expecting the clock face to be complete on every side.

Bells and archaeological finds on display

The bells have marked celebrations and warnings over the centuries. The exhibition includes a bronze bell from the 18th century that the tower describes as still original. The archaeological cases include Roman coins of the emperors Vespasian and Valens, pierced shells once used as jewelry, and medieval bronze pins and belt buckles.

The view from the top over Ptuj

The top level opens onto the panorama across the old town and its rooftops, with the castle hill in the wider scene. The tower describes its view as one of the most beautiful over Ptuj and its surroundings, and visitors' reviews single out the view from the top. The climb is the price of the view, so budget energy for the stairs.

Access for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility

The tower is a historic structure, and the owners state that access for wheelchairs and people with physical limitations is not possible. Plan an alternative viewpoint if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or cannot manage stairs. The castle hill and its surroundings are a separate stop covered in the Ptuj Castle (Ptujski grad) guide.

How much time to allow and nearby stops

Sponsored

Allow time for the climb, the exhibition and a stop at the top, and add more if you read the panels carefully or visit with a group capped at 40 people per floor. In the old town, the Dominican Monastery Ptuj is another stop within walking distance.

After the tower, Ptuj Castle (Ptujski grad) is an easy add-on, and Lake Ptuj (Ptujsko jezero) is a longer walk or drive out of the center. Pair the tower with one other stop rather than trying to cover everything on the same afternoon.

Is the tower climb right for your day in Ptuj?

The tower suits travelers who can manage stairs and want the clock, the bells and the rooftop view in a compact stop. If stairs are a problem, skip it and give the time to the castle hill instead. Check the tower's website for the current seasonal hours and ticket page before you set out, since those details can change.
