Piran sightseeing: plan your square, harbor and cape stops

Piran packs its sights tightly: a marble main square, a harbor lined with old palazzi, and a lighthouse out on the Punta cape. Most of the old town is closed to cars, so you arrive by free shuttle from the car parks and move on foot.

Tartini Square anchors everything, paved in white marble that traces an old tram turning circle and marked by the bronze statue of violinist Giuseppe Tartini. A few steps away, the Venetian House at number 4 shows a 15th-century Gothic facade you read from the pavement — carved windows, a corner balcony, a lion with its banner and the 'Lasa pur dir' inscription.

Along the harbor, the Maritime Museum fills the Gabrielli Palace with fishing, archaeology and shipping collections, and the small Aquarium Piran shows roughly 140 species of northern Adriatic life. Both sit indoors and suit a wet hour; booking is recommended for the museum.

Across the bay, the Seča peninsula above Portorož holds more than 130 stone sculptures among olive trees — a free walk rather than a museum.
