Parking at Postojna Cave is simple: one large car park sits at the park entrance and charges a flat full-day rate, so you pay once whether you stay for the cave tour or spend the rest of the day nearby. The catch is at Predjama Castle, about nine kilometers away, where parking is billed by the hour. This guide breaks down each car park, the motorhome area, EV charging, and the train, bus and shuttle options for arriving without a car.

How much parking at Postojna Cave costs for cars and buses

A full-day parking ticket at the entrance to Postojna Cave Park costs EUR 6, and the lot takes both cars and buses. Because the rate covers the whole day rather than the hour, there is no penalty for lingering over the Vivarium, Expo Cave Karst or a meal at Hotel Jama after your cave slot. Budget the EUR 6 as a fixed cost of the day and plan the rest of your spending around it.

The official park publishes a charge for the entrance car park, so do not plan on parking there for nothing. If you are weighing ticket types for the day, our guide to Postojna Cave Tickets sets out the options before you drive.

Where the main car park sits relative to the cave entrance

The main car park is at the entrance to Postojna Cave Park, which means you walk from the car to the ticket office and meeting point rather than driving between them. That layout matters because cave visits run on scheduled slots and you board fifteen minutes before your time, so arriving with a buffer beats circling for a closer spot. Park once, collect your tickets, and use the same lot for everything inside the park.

Hotel guests and VIP visitors have a separate P1 lot with eight electric vehicle spaces; the general car park is the one most day visitors use. The park also runs a shuttle bus and publishes its own information page covering tickets, parking, shuttle and accessibility in one place, useful when you want to confirm arrangements before setting out.

Parking at Predjama Castle: the hourly rate and the local road

Sponsored

Predjama Castle is reached by a local road and its parking is charged at EUR 3 per hour, so the cost scales with how long you stay. A quick walk around the castle exterior and a photo stop costs far less than a full castle tour plus lunch, and that difference is the main reason to decide your castle time before you park. If the castle is the centerpiece of your day, a dedicated

The castle stands about nine kilometers from the cave entrance, which is why the park suggests visiting the castle first and the cave in the afternoon. Running that order keeps your cave slot fixed and your hourly castle parking short, rather than paying by the hour while you wait for a later cave departure. Travelers combining both sights in one day can see how the pairing works in our guide to the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle.

Motorhome parking near the cave: season, hook-ups and overnight price

Motorhome owners get a large, well-equipped area 250 meters from the Postojna Cave entrance, open from April to October, with water and electricity hook-ups and a sewer connection. A 24-hour stay costs EUR 25 per night. The catch is the season: outside April to October, plan on a different base rather than assuming the motorhome area is available.

That proximity is the real value here. You can walk to the cave entrance in a few minutes, skip the day-parking routine, and treat the area as a base for the wider Karst rather than a single night's stop. Confirm availability for your dates directly with the park before you commit, since the season is fixed and the number of pitches is not something you can judge from the road.

Electric vehicle charging in the P1 lot and its rate

The P1 parking lot, reserved for hotel guests and VIP visitors, has eight electric vehicle spaces with charging power between 1.4 kW and 11 kW. General day visitors parking in the main car park should not count on those P1 chargers being available to them.

If you are driving an EV, the sensible move is to charge at your accommodation or in Postojna town and treat the P1 chargers as a bonus rather than the plan. The cave tour itself takes an hour and a half at a constant 10 °C, so the chargers are unlikely to be top of your mind.

Getting to the park by car: the A1 motorway and Postojna exit

By car, reach Postojna Cave Park from the A1 motorway via the Postojna exit, number 41, which sits two kilometers from the park. The drive takes less than an hour from Ljubljana or Rijeka and about two hours from Venice or Zagreb. Arriving by car gives you the most flexibility for adding Predjama Castle, since you control the timing between the two sites.

Coming from the coast, Koper and Trieste join the same motorway, so the cave fits naturally into a route between the Adriatic and Ljubljana. The trade-off is that a car locks you into paying for both car parks, whereas the shuttle and train options can cut one of those charges.

Arriving by train to Postojna and walking or riding the local bus to the park

Trains on the Vienna–Venice line stop directly in Postojna town, and from the station the walk to Postojna Cave Park takes approximately 25 minutes. A local bus links the railway station, the bus station and the cave park, which saves the walk if you are carrying bags or visiting in poor weather. Hourly buses also run from Ljubljana to Postojna's town-center bus station.

Without a car you skip both parking charges entirely and the day becomes a simple train-bus-cave sequence. The constraint is timing: cave visits run on fixed slots, so check the train and local bus times against your booked departure rather than the other way around.

The shuttle between the cave entrance and Predjama Castle

Visitors holding tickets to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle can use the shuttle service between the park entrance and the castle, but it runs only part of the year. That seasonal limit is the deciding factor for car-free travelers: outside the shuttle season, reaching the castle nine kilometers away means arranging a taxi at the ticket office or joining an organized transfer.

When the shuttle is running, it removes the hourly castle parking charge and lets you spend your castle time on the visit rather than the drive. Confirm the shuttle is operating for your dates before you build the day around it, and have a taxi as the fallback.

A practical parking plan for visiting the cave and castle the same day

Sponsored

The park's own suggested order is Predjama Castle first, then the cave in the afternoon. Follow it and you pay the flat EUR 6 at the cave entrance for the rest of the day while keeping castle parking limited to the hours you actually spend there. Book the cave slot first, then work backward to a castle arrival that leaves enough buffer for the drive.

Inside the cave, expect a 3.7-kilometer ride on the underground train plus a walk along an easy footpath, led by guides. The cave is open every day, including holidays, and the constant 10 °C makes warm clothing and sports shoes the practical choice. For what each ticket includes, see Postojna Cave Tickets.

Which parking option fits your day

Take the flat entrance car park if you are driving and want the simplest day, and add the castle only if you are comfortable with hourly charges there. Travelers without a car should lean on the train and local bus, then use the seasonal shuttle or a taxi for Predjama Castle. Whichever you choose, book the cave slot first and let parking and transport fit around it.
