Murska Sobota suits a half day, not a full one: a castle museum, a park walk, a central square and one modern exhibition pavilion fit comfortably before lunch. The town is often described as the capital of Prekmurje, and its sights sit close enough together to cover on foot once you have parked. This guide lays out the castle-to-square axis, the Expano seasonal hours, the lakeside loop and the practical details for arriving and getting around, as part of a wider Prekmurje trip.

How Murska Sobota is laid out

The town reads as one axis. Murska Sobota Castle at Trubarjev drevored 4 stands in the middle of an English-style landscape park called Mestni park, and a tree-lined avenue continues from the castle to a Neo-Gothic Evangelic church built between 1907 and 1910. Walk that line in either direction and you pass the monuments, the lawns and the church without needing a map.

For the everyday center, look to Glavni trg (Main Square) with the Church of St. Nicholas, and to Slovenska ulica, where the tourist information center sits at number 38. Glavni trg is where the town's main buildings and the church come together, so it makes a natural second half of the walk after the park. Plan the route as castle, park, avenue, church, then square rather than zigzagging between pins.

Murska Sobota Castle and what is inside

The castle you see was rebuilt in Renaissance style at the end of the 16th century on the foundations of a 13th-century fortification, then restored in the mid-18th century. Look for two architectural details: on the east side, a Baroque gate portal framed by two atlantes figures set under a balcony, and on the west side, a Baroque chapel added to the building. The four corner towers are square in plan and stay below the main roofline, which keeps the facade unusually flat.

Inside, the first floor has housed the Murska Sobota Regional Museum since 1956, and the building also holds the MIKK Youth Information Cultural Club, the KRIK Multimedia Centre Pomurje and a restaurant. Upstairs, a festival hall in the wing with the balcony carries frescoes and stucco work, including an allegory of Peace attributed to the period 1760 to 1780. Knowing which parts are architecture and which are exhibitions helps you decide how long to stay.

The Pomurje Museum exhibitions

Sponsored

The museum's main permanent exhibition, installed in autumn 1997, traces life in the region along the Mura River from prehistoric times to the present, and it won the European Museum of the Year Award in 1999. Temporary exhibitions occupy the second-floor gallery, so the reason to go inside is as much the rotating show as the permanent collection. Check what is currently on before you commit an hour to the museum.

Opening times and admission for the museum are set by the Pomurje Museum, which runs the castle. Confirm current hours and ticket prices with the museum or the tourist information center before you build a day around them, especially outside the summer months.

Walking Mestni park and Trubarjev drevored

Mestni park was designed at the turn of the 20th century in the English landscape style, and it wraps the castle on all sides. In its southeastern corner stands a monument to the National Liberation War, erected in 1945 and designed by the Russian architect Arončik with the Slovene sculptors Boris and Zdenko Kalin. It is a short detour off the main lawn path and worth the few extra minutes.

The avenue continues in the axis of the castle, lined with trees around 200 years old, and ends at the Evangelic church. Walking the full length takes minutes rather than an hour, which is why the park works better as a route between the castle and the center than as a destination on its own. Come here first thing if you want the lawns and the avenue quieter.

Glavni trg and the Church of St. Nicholas

Glavni trg is the heart of town, lined with buildings of the region's architectural heritage and anchored by the Church of St. Nicholas, which dominates the skyline. Treat the square as a place to sit and look rather than a ticketed sight: there is nothing to queue for, and the pleasure is in the ensemble of facades and the church tower above them. It is a five-minute walk from the park axis, so combine the two rather than making separate trips.

Expano: hours by season

Sponsored

Expano, the regional tourism information center and interactive exhibition pavilion at Bakovska ulica 41, keeps two seasonal schedules. From November to March it is open Tuesday to Sunday and on holidays, 10:00 to 17:00; from April to October it opens Tuesday to Sunday and on holidays, 10:00 to 18:00. It opens Tuesday through Sunday in both seasons, so a Monday visit is the single most common planning mistake here.

The pavilion pairs displays about the Prekmurje region with a panoramic tower, and its grounds include a lake and a motor-skills park that contributors describe as a good stop with children. Budget an hour if you want the exhibition and the tower, and more if the weather keeps you outside on the grounds. Because the hours change by season, check the month band before you set off.

Soboško jezero and the Mura riverbank

Soboško jezero, also called Lake Sobota, is the easy outdoor hour: a flat lake with a walking loop that a local contributor estimates takes about an hour or a little longer at a relaxed pace. Take that as a rough figure rather than a signposted distance, and allow extra if you stop at the shoreline. The lake is also the setting for Expano's grounds, so pair the two in a single outing.

Nearer the town, the Mura River and its nature reserve give you a riverside walk without leaving the area, and the river landscapes are what make this flat corner of Slovenia feel open rather than urban. If you have only an hour outdoors, choose the lake for the loop or the riverbank for shade and water; don't try to do both.

Parking, buses and bike share

Park on the edge of town and ride in: the Sobočanec system is built around parking at the fringe and taking a suburban bus into the center, and the town also runs Soboški biciklin bike share, which has spread from Murska Sobota into the surrounding countryside. Electric scooter and car-share options (Avant2Go) round out the list. In a town this compact, parking once at the edge and walking the axis is usually faster than hunting for a space near Glavni trg.

The tourist information center at Slovenska ulica 38 is open Monday to Friday 9:00 to 16:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 13:00, closed on holidays, and it is the place to pick up local maps and confirm what is running. It sits in the center, so drop in at the start of your walk rather than the end.

How long to allow, and fitting in Maribor

Give Murska Sobota half a day: castle museum, park axis, square, then Expano or the lake depending on the weather. The tourist board lists Maribor 30 minutes away, Ljubljana two hours, Koper three hours and the nearest airport one hour, which puts the town within easy reach for a Prekmurje loop but too far for a casual add-on from the coast.

If you are touring the region, pair the town with Lendava further east rather than trying to squeeze both into one afternoon. Thermal spas such as Terme 3000 are nearby for an overnight, and the wider Prekmurje countryside rewards a slower second day.

Prekmurje food to look for

Sponsored

Two dishes define the local table: Prekmurska gibanica, the layered pastry, and bograč, a hearty meat stew. Look for them on menus around Glavni trg and Slovenska ulica rather than seeking out a specific address; the town's restaurant scene is small and the specialties turn up widely. Order the gibanica as a dessert and the bograč as a main, and you have covered the region's essentials in one meal.

Should Murska Sobota be on your Prekmurje route?

Yes, if you want a compact town with a real museum, a leafy axis and an easy lakeside hour, and you are already driving through the northeast. No, if you are based on the coast: three hours from Koper makes it an overnight, not a detour, and the town's pleasures are modest enough that they reward a relaxed schedule.

Build the day around the castle and park in the morning, confirm the museum's hours and ticket price before you go, then use the afternoon for Expano or Soboško jezero. Park at the edge, take the bus or walk in, and leave the car where it is until you head for Maribor.
