Villages around Kranjska Gora: Waterfalls, Farms and Border Walks

The villages around Kranjska Gora spread along the Sava Dolinka valley, each with a different job. Gozd Martuljek is the best-known of them, yet its gorge branch is closed for crumbly ground, so hikers follow the signed route via Brunarica Pri Ingotu to the Lower and Upper Martuljek waterfalls.

Mojstrana sits farther up the Zgornjesavska dolina at the foot of the road into the Vrata valley, with the Slovenian Alpine Museum as its orientation point; shops and restaurants are a short drive away. Podkoren, above the Sava, keeps several 17th-century farmhouses in the Alpine style of stone below and timber above, and its core takes an hour to walk.

Rateče, near the Italian and Austrian borders, is small enough to cross on foot around its church square and suits meadow walks to Zelenci and the Three Countries Border. Each of these makes a half-day stop except Podkoren, and none is a place to arrive hungry without a plan.
