Velenje Coal Mining Museum: Underground Tour Times and Booking
The Slovenian Coal Mining Museum in Velenje runs underground tours Tuesday to Saturday at 9:00, 12:00 and 14:00, and every visit must be booked by phone first.
On this page
The Slovenian Coal Mining Museum in Velenje is a subterranean visit rather than a walk-through gallery, and it runs on three fixed tour slots a day for individual visitors and families, so you plan your day around 9:00, 12:00 or 14:00. Every visit has to be booked in advance, which makes this a stop you schedule rather than stumble into.
This guide covers where the museum sits on Koroška cesta at the Old Shaft, its opening days, how the booking works, what happens during the descent by lift and the underground train ride, and the age rule that decides whether younger children can join. It also covers the surface heritage displays and how to pair the museum with the rest of the town.
Where the museum sits in Velenje
The museum is the Muzej premogovništva Slovenije, and its address is Koroška cesta at the Old Shaft, Stari jašek, in Velenje. That is the anchor for a taxi or a map search: ask for the Old Shaft rather than the town center, because the entrance is tied to the former mine site.
Velenje itself is a compact town wrapped around its lake, and the museum sits within the wider Šaleška Valley. If you are building a day around the museum, the Velenje: What to See in Slovenia's City by the Lake guide covers how the town is laid out and what else fills the hours around a fixed tour slot.

Opening days and the Sunday and Monday closure
The museum opens Tuesday to Saturday, from 9:00 to 16:30, and it is closed on Sundays and Mondays. That single fact drives most trip planning: a weekend visit works on Saturday but not Sunday, and a Monday in Velenje means finding something else to do.
If your only free day in the valley falls on a Sunday or Monday, the surface displays are not an alternative, because the whole museum is shut. Velenje castle, which houses the town museum, is the obvious swap, and it is a short walk uphill from the town center.

The three tour slots and joining an existing group
Individual visitors and families are placed at 9:00, 12:00 or 14:00, or can join an existing group. In practice you pick a slot when you call, arrive ahead of it, and descend with whoever else is booked at that time rather than drifting through at your own pace.
Because the slots are fixed, the museum works best as the first or middle block of your day. The 9:00 descent leaves the rest of the morning and afternoon open for the lake and the town, while the 14:00 slot means arriving in Velenje with time to spare before going underground.
How to book a visit
All visits need to be booked in advance by phone, on +386 (0)31 752 418, and the museum also lists muzej@rlv.si for contact. Call before you build the rest of the day around a slot, and have your preferred time and group size ready.
Group tours are arranged separately, by prior arrangement, so a larger party should say so when booking rather than turning up as a string of individual families. The museum's own price list page is where admission figures appear, so check it when you call instead of relying on secondhand numbers.
What the underground tour involves
The visit goes below ground by lift, stops at a cantina 160 meters beneath the surface, and includes an underground train ride. The Šaleška Valley tourist board describes that sequence for its combined day package, which pairs the museum with paddleboarding and a bike picnic.
That package is a separate product from museum admission: it runs from 1 July to 31 August, Monday to Saturday, costs from 46 EUR per person, and bundles the museum visit with an hour of SUP hire on Lake Velenje, three hours of pony-bike hire with a picnic basket and a beach chair for the day. It also requires booking at least three days ahead, so it suits travelers who want the lake and the mine in one booking.
If you only want the mine, keep to the museum's own booking line and slot times. The underground route is a guided descent with a group, so expect to move with that group rather than linger at individual exhibits.
The age rule and traveling with younger children
The subterranean tour is suitable for persons aged 6 and over. That is a firm planning constraint: a family with a four- or five-year-old cannot take the underground route as it stands, and should not book a slot expecting an exception.
Families with younger children can split up, with one adult taking the underground tour while the other stays above ground, then swap on a later slot if space allows. Call ahead to confirm how that works on your date before promising anyone a turn.
The surface collection and heritage displays
Above ground, the museum's heritage pages cover the objects and customs of the mine, including the pit check: control plates that miners placed on a board, one board per team, so the mine always knew who was present. A plate still on the board at the end of a shift meant a miner was missing or had been in an accident.
The same heritage section explains the rock hammers, the pair of hand-held tools that served as the mining emblem, one for each hand and used as an inseparable unit. Other pages cover the miner's lamp, the mining uniform and the miners' greeting, so the surface material gives context that the descent alone does not.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and events, so the surface offering on your date may extend beyond the permanent heritage displays. Ask what is showing when you book, since that changes how long you want above ground.
How long to allow and pairing it with the rest of Velenje
Plan the museum as a half day rather than a quick stop: you need to arrive before your slot, complete the descent and train ride with the group, and then have time for the surface displays. A 12:00 slot comfortably fills the middle of the day and leaves the late afternoon free.
Group tours and private events
Groups are taken by prior arrangement, so schools, companies and tour operators should book directly with the museum rather than through an individual slot. The same applies to anyone planning a larger family gathering around the visit.
The museum also hosts celebrations, either 160 meters below ground or in the surface premises, including the Black and White Cloakrooms, the Muster Room, the Bathroom and the museum park. That makes the site an option for a birthday or anniversary with an industrial backdrop rather than a standard restaurant room.
Which tour slot should you book?
Book the 9:00 slot if you want the museum done before the day fills up, the 12:00 slot if you want a single anchor in the middle of a Velenje day, and 14:00 only if you are arriving from elsewhere that morning. Whichever you choose, call +386 (0)31 752 418 first, because the advance booking is what makes the rest of the plan work.
Skip Sunday and Monday entirely, check the 6-and-over rule before promising a descent to younger children, and look at the museum's price list when you call so you know what the visit costs before you commit.
